Dreamspun Alpaca is registered trade name for fine alpaca and alpaca-blend products purveyed worldwide by Heartland Ranch Country Store, Inc. We are dedicated to the promotion of alpacas and alpaca products. The alpaca is a member of the camel family, native to the Andes mountains of South America. It was domesticated over 10,000 years ago by pre-Inca peoples, who prized the fiber of the alpaca so much that it was originally reserved only for royalty! Alpaca is three times warmer than wool for the weight but lighter and more breathable. Alpaca comes in 22 beautiful natural colors, more than any other natural fiber on earth. In addition, alpaca fiber does not generally require the harsh chemical processing and cleaning that wool does. Rather, natural-colored alpaca is washed with a mild, bio-degradable detergent. As a result, alpaca fiber processing is gentler on our environment and safer for chemically-sensitive individuals. Fine alpaca also lacks the "prickle" of wool, and can often be worn directly next to even sensitive skin! In addition to providing us with their luxurious fiber, the alpaca is a wonderful livestock animal. The padded foot is gentle on delicate natural pasturelands; they do not overgraze; they are thrifty with feed and more drought-resistant than traditional livestock. In addition to being ecologically sound in keeping with the principles of renewable resource farming, they are both graceful and gentle - truly a delight to raise. For these reasons, Heartland Ranch breeds, raises, trains and shows alpacas in addition to harvesting the fiber and sending it to be processed at mills in the U.S. and abroad. As a completely vertically-integrated alpaca grower, we are involved with as many steps as possible of the fiber-processing. By removing many of the middle-men in the chain between grower and customer, we are able to provide quality alpaca products at very reasonable prices. Our business partnerships are primarily with rural cooperatives in Peru and the U.S., as we are committed to improving the standard of living in economically-disadvantaged communities at home and abroad. We encourage artisans in such communities to utilize native spinning, dyeing and weaving techniques, rewarding innovation and creativity rather than assembly-line production; and we pay fair wages on the world market. Witnessing first-hand the improvement in our partners' quality of life as we proudly introduce their products to an eager worldwide market has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this enterprise.
